The tender, a separate car coupled behind the locomotive, carries these supplies. Large engines store nearly eight tonnes of coal and over four thousand gallons of water, with the water alone weighing approximately twenty tonnes when full.

Pressure gauges inform operators about boiler pressure- insufficient pressure prevents the engine from pulling its load, while excessive pressure wastes steam through safety valves. The driver manipulates various controls including the regulator for speed, the reverser for direction, and cut-off settings that determine how long steam enters cylinders during each stroke.

Wheel size significantly impacts performance. Freight locomotives feature numerous smaller wheels providing extra adhesion for starting heavy trains, while express passenger locomotives use larger wheels reaching six feet eight inches in diameter for higher speeds.
